Suspect arrested after admitting to making bomb threat toward Benton Harbor mosque

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. — A New Buffalo man was arrested and held at the Berrien County Jail Friday after he allegedly called in a false bomb threat to a Benton Harbor-area mosque, according to Benton Township Police Department.

Officers with the department were made aware of the bomb threat made towards the Islamic Association of Southwest Michigan, located at 1381 E. Napier, and responded just before 1:45 p.m. When they arrived, several worshipers from the mosque met police and said they were unaware of the threat.

The building was quickly evacuated and secured, but police were unable to find an explosive device. According to police, a member of the mosque directed police towards a suspect they believed could be involved. Police were able to find the man, a 38-year-old New Buffalo man, at the Fairplan Plaza where he was then taken to the department for questioning.

After a short time, the man admitted to calling in the threat and it was confirmed as his cell phone number matched the number that called 9-1-1.

The suspect is now being lodged at the Berrien County Jail and awaiting further charges.
