WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Beautification is coming to the Greater Lafayette Islamic Center.
Mosque members spent the afternoon planting and building lawn furniture for the center’s front yard.

They’re working to make the mosque more welcoming to the community. It’s the first time in five years the mosque has seen major outdoor renovations.
Sunday’s workers are involved in Purdue’s Muslim Student Association. MSA Alumna Nadia Farooqi said the mosque isn’t just for Muslims.
“Just trying to make it more welcoming and inviting,” said Farooqi. “It’s time for a change for the Masjid, especially with recent events that have happened against the Muslim communities and so we’re just trying to change the perception, the perspective, and the image.”
Farooqi hopes this brings the community closer.
“It’s not just exclusively just for Muslims. We’re trying to promote inclusivity in the Mosque by saying it’s for everyone,” said Farooqi. “It’s also to promote, you know, hey come on in learn about our religion see what the Mosque looks like.”
They plan to have work finished before Ramadan in May.
