FAIRFAX, Va. (FOX 5 DC) – A northern Virginia man who pleaded guilty to raping and killing a Muslim teenager has been sentenced to life without parole. Darwin Martinez-Torres of Sterling was sentenced in court on Thursday.
In November of last year, Martinez-Torres pleaded guilty to the 2017 slaying of 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen.
Police say Hassanen was killed as she walked back to a mosque with friends after a pre-dawn, fast-food meal ahead of Ramadan services in the Sterling area.
Hassanen’s death received widespread attention amid concerns that her slaying was motivated by anti-Muslim sentiment, though police repeatedly said they had no evidence of a hate crime.
