The American ambassador to Iraq was making his rounds among the Grand Ayatullahs of Iraq during the last week of November. According to Sayyid Salih al-Hakim, who works for the Office of Grand Ayatullah Sayyid Sa‘id al-Hakim, the American ambassador was attempting to convince the Sources of Emulation from Iraq to adopt an anti-Iranian stance. Despite the fact that the Grand Ayatullahs from the Najaf Seminary do not agree with the theory of wilayat al-faqih or the guardianship of the jurist, they refuse to denounce Iran for the simple sake of pleasing US foreign policy. Despite the differences they may have with Iran in matters of political theory, and their objections regarding some of its domestic and foreign policies, they generally view the Islamic Republic as a powerful nation that plays an influential role in the region and accomplishes many positive things. The Iraqi Religious Authorities do not view themselves as enemies of Iran. “We wish to have friendly relations with both the United States and Iran,” explained the representative of Grand Ayatullah al-Hakim. The response from the American ambassador was hardly as diplomatic: “You are either with us or you are against us.”
